Drug InteractionsĪlthough certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. Studies in women suggest that this medication poses minimal risk to the infant when used during breastfeeding. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related heart, liver, lung, or kidney problems, which may require caution in patients receiving nitrofurantoin. GeriatricĪppropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of nitrofurantoin in the elderly. Safety and efficacy have not been established in infants below 1 month of age. I think a small glass of champagne will not be much of a problem right?īy the way, how long does nitrofurantoin stay in the system? If I take the antibiotic the night before and have the champagne almost twenty four hours later at the reception, will that be better? At least I won't be taking them together.Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated pediatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of nitrofurantoin in children. I'm on nitrofurantoin for a urinary tract infection and I will still be on it on the wedding day. My little sister is getting married and even though I don't plan on drinking much, I would still like to raise a toast to them with some champagne. But I might need to make an exception next week. I generally follow the rule of not combining antibiotics with alcohol. Using them together is going to put immense pressure on your liver. Antibiotics in general wear out the liver and so does alcohol. But I think it will be better if you don't. I understand you want to enjoy some alcohol on your sister's big day. If you miss a dose, the medicine will not work as well. If you are planning on missing a dose so that you can reduce the likelihood of complications, that's a bad idea. I imagine the higher the dose and the longer you take it, the higher the risks will be when you also drink alcohol. July 20, That's best answered by your doctor because I don't know what dose of nitrofurantoin you're taking, how many doses per day and for how many days/weeks. Like I said, please don't make your decision based on my experience. It's not a good idea to have more than one or two light alcoholic drinks regardless of which antibiotic you're taking. The emphasis is on the moderate part though. So I think that for the most part, if you drink moderately, it will be fine. But I haven't heard of that happening with nitrofurantoin. My friend had a drink while taking the antibiotic metronidazole once and she did have bad side effects. I think that nitrofurantoin is one of the better antibiotics that is not as dangerous when combined with alcohol. I didn't have any side effects or any problems. When I was on nitrofurantoin, I did have one beer on two separate occasions. This is just my opinion so please don't make a decision based on this alone. July 21, First, let me put it out there that I'm not an expert.
